What Is Kokum?

What Is Kokum?

Born on India’s Western Coast

Kokum grows along India’s western coast, particularly in the lush tropical regions of Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala.

For generations, the deep purple fruit has been used in home kitchens, coastal cooking, and traditional drinks. While it remains a household staple in many parts of India, it is still relatively unknown outside the region.

Its appearance is striking, but its flavour is what makes it memorable.

Tart, Bright, and Deeply Refreshing

Kokum delivers a refreshing tartness that sits somewhere between cranberry, pomegranate, and sour cherry.

Unlike citrus fruits, its acidity feels softer and rounder. The flavour is bright without being sharp, making it especially suited to refreshing beverages.

Its deep ruby colour and naturally complex taste have made it a favourite ingredient in Indian kitchens for centuries.

From Sol Kadhi to Summer Sherbet

Across western India, kokum appears in a variety of dishes and drinks.

One of the most well-known is Sol Kadhi, a cooling coastal drink traditionally made with kokum and coconut.

It is also used to make refreshing summer sherbets, curries, chutneys, and sauces.

Long before modern soft drinks existed, kokum-based beverages were already being enjoyed as a way to cool down during hot summer months.

Traditionally Enjoyed After Meals

For generations, kokum has been valued not only for its flavour but also for its place in everyday life along India’s western coast.

Traditionally, kokum-based drinks were often enjoyed during hot weather and after meals. Many families appreciated the fruit for its refreshing character and its longstanding association with digestive comfort.

Today, kokum continues to be enjoyed across western India as part of a rich culinary tradition that extends well beyond its distinctive tart flavour.

Why We Built a Drink Around Kokum

When we started building DesiPop, we wanted to introduce people to ingredients that deserved a larger stage.

Kokum immediately stood out.

Its vibrant colour, refreshing tartness, and deep cultural roots made it unlike anything commonly found in sparkling beverages.

Our Spiced Kokum combines real kokum with carefully selected spices to create a drink that feels both familiar and entirely new.

Rather than recreating a traditional recipe, we wanted to capture the spirit of an ingredient that has been quietly loved for generations.

A Fruit Worth Discovering

Some ingredients become famous because they are everywhere. Others remain hidden gems. Kokum belongs firmly in the second category.

It is a fruit with a remarkable history, a distinctive flavour, and a deep connection to the communities that have used it for generations.

We believe it deserves to be discovered.
